Studying Nursing in Ghana gives aspiring nurses the required education that they need to start their careers as professional nurses. However, studying nursing in Ghana is not an easy venture. This course is a competitive one and demands that you fulfil the basic entry requirements before you can get admitted. Therefore, you must ensure that you prepare effectively and have the basic requirements that are required for studying nursing in Ghana.

 

In this piece, I will walk you through the admission requirements that are needed for studying nursing in Ghana.

 

Requirements for Studying Nursing in Ghana

  1. West African Senior Certificate Examination(WASSCE)

    You must have a minimum of Grade C6 in three core and three elective subjects. You must have subjects such as English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science. Additionally, you must have subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc. Generally, you should have an aggregate of 36 in your certificate.

  2. Senior Secondary School Certificate(SSCE)

    You must have a minimum of Grade C in your SSCE. However, you should have higher grades to be able to gain admission. Additionally, you must have obtained an aggregate score of 24 or higher. You must have subjects such as English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science. Additionally, you must have subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.

  3. General Certificate of Education Advanced Level

    You must have a Grade C in three subjects. They must include subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science. Additionally, you must have at least credits in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects.

  4. Mature Applicants

    If you are 25 years and above, you will be categorized under mature applicants. Therefore, you must provide your birth certificate to show proof of your age. Additionally, you must have at least five credits in your O’level certificate. This must include subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

  5. Bachelor’s Degree Holders

    You must have a bachelor’s degree in a science-related course. Additionally, you should have a minimum of a second-class upper in your CGPA.

  6. Diploma Certificate Holders

    You should hold a diploma in nursing education/administration or a related field. Additionally, this certificate must be from a recognised institution. Secondly, you must have a good grade on your certificate. You should have a minimum of CGPA of 3.25.

  7. Health Assistant Clinical

    Applicants with Health Assistant Clinical (HAC) and Nurse Assistant Clinical (NAC)will be considered after successful completion of an NMC-recognized Access Course.

  8. International General Certificate of Secondary Education(IGCSE)

    You must have at least credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects. They must be subjects such as English and Mathematics. Additionally, you must have at least three (3) passes in relevant subjects at the Advanced Level.

  9. International Baccalaureate (IB)

    You must have a minimum of grade 4 at the Higher Level in three (3) subjects that are relevant to this course. Additionally, you should have a minimum of grade 4 in English/Literature and Mathematics.

  10. American High School

    You must have completed your Grade 12 Examinations. Generally, you should have a Final Grade point of 3.0. Additionally, you should have an SAT score of at least 1200.

 

How to Apply

Firstly, you need to select a nursing school or university that you are interested in applying to. You should make sure that the school you are applying to is accredited. Secondly, you visit the school’s website and fill out the application form.

 

Duration

The duration for obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing is four years in Ghana.

 

Tuition Fee

The tuition fee for studying medicine and surgery in Ghana depends on the university you are applying to. Generally, the average tuition ranges between 8,000 GHC – 20,000 GHC. However, some nursing schools might require higher tuition fees. Additionally, International students pay higher tuition fees.
