Requirements for Studying Accounting in Nigeria

1. Obtain an O’level Certificate

   You must have an O’level result to apply to study Accounting in Nigeria. Additionally, you need to have at least five credit passes in your O’level results. You must have credits in subjects such as English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting. The fifth subject can be any other subject such as government or commerce. The O’level result can be WAEC, NECO or NABTEB. The certificate choice can vary depending on the University you are applying to.

2. Write the JAMB examination

   You must write the JAMB examination before you can gain admission to Accounting. This is a major requirement for all schools in Nigeria. You need to register and write subjects such as Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and any other social science subject. Additionally, the cut-off mark for accounting is 220. However, this can vary for different schools which might have a higher or a lower cut-off mark. Therefore, you need to get a high score to give you a better chance of getting admission.

3. Write the POST-UTME

   This examination is conducted by the universities during the admission process. Every aspiring student must write this examination. Additionally, each school has a cut-off point that is used to screen students into the accounting department. Requirements for Direct Entry Applicants

Direct entry applicants are applicants who already have a first degree from either a university or a polytechnic. These applicants will start studying from the 200 level if they gain admission into the university.

1. Have an O’level Certificate

   You must have an O’level certificate. This can be either WAEC, NECO or NABTEB. Additionally, your O’level certificate must not be more than two sittings.

2. Have a First Degree

   You can fall under the category only if you have a first degree. You must have a first degree such as OND, HND, or NCE. Additionally, These degrees should be a discipline that is relevant to the accounting field. Furthermore, you must have a minimum of second-class upper, two passes or upper credit in your first degree.

3. Purchase a Direct Entry Form

   You need to purchase the direct entry form through the JAMB portal. Additionally, you should ensure that you register your choice of University as the first choice of institution. Secondly, you should register for direct entry on the university’s portal.

How to Apply

Firstly, you can apply for this course by registering your choice of institution when registering for JAMB. Secondly, you should ensure that you take the university’s Post UTME examinations. Furthermore, you need to check the university’s portal regularly to verify your admission status.

Duration

The duration for studying accounting in Nigeria is four (4) years. You will obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. You can apply to a federal, state or private university.
